Scoliosis Treatment
for Children and Adults

Evidence based scoliosis specific physiotherapy and bracing

Scoliosis Treatment

Physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises (PSSE) are a specialised form of physiotherapy aimed at managing and reducing the progression of scoliosis.

Bracing is a non-surgical treatment method used to treat scoliosis, generally for growing kids and teenagers. Each brace is custom-made to fit the patient’s body structure

Individualised rehabilitation programs designed to optimise surgical outcomes and post-operative recovery, encompassing pain management, muscle balance, and respiratory function.

I Have The Following

For our younger patients, particularly during critical growth periods, we provide custom-made scoliosis braces. These braces serve as an invaluable tool in preventing further curve progression. Additionally, our collaborative approach extends to working closely with scoliosis surgeons, enabling us to offer comprehensive pre and post-rehabilitation programs tailored specifically to candidates undergoing spinal fusion surgery. By bridging the gap between conservative and surgical interventions, we ensure continuity of care and optimal outcomes for our patients.

Anchor 1

Unsure if you have scoliosis or kyphosis? You can book for a comprehensive 30mins screening with one of our physiotherapists. Regular scoliosis screening is crucial to catch the condition in its early stages. It's particularly important for children and adolescents who are at a higher risk, including those in the midst of growth spurts or with a family history of scoliosis.

Can my spine become straighter?

The ability of your spine to become straighter depends on various factors, such as your age, the degree of curvature, and the underlying cause of the scoliosis. For adults with scoliosis, the potential for the spine to become straighter is more limited. Once the bones have stopped growing, the curvature tends to become stable, and significant improvement through non-surgical means is less likely. However, non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy and exercises can help improve posture, reduce pain, and increase flexibility, which can contribute to a better quality of life.

Your Schroth-certified physiotherapists at Curv can work with you to assess your curve and set realistic expectations for physiotherapy.

What is the difference between Curv and other physiotherapy clinics?

At Curv, we differentiate ourselves from other physiotherapy clinics through our exclusive focus on scoliosis. We are not your everyday physiotherapy clinic; our therapists are all trained in the Schroth Method, a scientifically validated and globally recognised therapeutic approach for spinal conditions. Scoliosis-specific exercises require a specific set up, equipment, appointment structure, and documentation – and we have created the ideal infrastructure for each of our clients to be as successful as possible.

This specialised training allows us to offer personalised, evidence-based treatment plans that can truly make a difference in our patients' lives.

What is the Schroth Method?

The Schroth Method is a non-surgical treatment for scoliosis that was developed by Katharina Schroth in the 1920s. It's a form of physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises (PSSE) that aims to de-rotate, elongate, and stabilise the spine in a three-dimensional plane. The exercises focus on restoring muscular symmetry and alignment of posture, and they can be tailored to the individual's unique curve patterns. Currently, there are very few Physiotherapists in Australia (or internationally!) that are certified in the Schroth Method, and we’re hoping that this treatment approach becomes more recognised in the near future.

Does scoliosis bracing work?

The brace does not cure scoliosis, but it helps control the progression of spinal curvature during growth periods. It is usually recommended for patient with moderate scoliosis with a cobb angle between 25-45 degrees.

The effectiveness of bracing as a treatment for scoliosis is backed by significant body of research. A landmark 2013 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine titled “Bracing in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Trial (BrAIST)” supported the efficacy of bracing.

The study found that bracing significantly decreased the progression of high-risk curves to the threshold for surgery in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. The researchers used both randomization and a preference cohort to assess the effectiveness of bracing versus observation. Patients who wore the brace for more hours per day experienced better outcomes. For those who wore braces, the success rate was 72%, and for those under observation, the success rate was 48%.

Our Intensive Treatment Program is an ideal solution for those residing outside the Gold Coast area. Pack a week’s worth of sessions into one focused period, maximising your time without sacrificing the quality of treatment. We recommend booking 8-10 hours of immersive, one-on-one treatment with your dedicated physiotherapist, typically spread over 2-4 hours per day for optimal engagement.

To ensure we reserve enough time for you that works with our schedule, please contact us at least 6 weeks before your planned trip.
